Jim Waters
Jim Waters MRCVS 19.3.1920 - 26.82012 Retired Halstead vet Jim Waters died peacefully in Broomfield Hospital surrounded by his family. Jims father brought the Halstead Veterinary Practice on January 1, 1920 and Jim was born a few months later and lived in the same house until a few days before his death. Due to army service Jim did not qualify until 1951 and he joined the practice then known as Waters and Logue. It was largely farm based and many cold nights were spent on farms sometimes stripped to the waist. He retired from The Waters Partnership in December 1988 when there were surgeries not only at Halstead but over a wide part of Essex. Jim and Helen, his wife of over 50 years, still found time for a busy social life and were often seen at local dances. They also travelled widely. Jim joined the Greenstead Green Agricultural Club and within a year of its formation was the second chairman and remained an active committee member until only a few years ago. He played tennis until he was nearly 70 and was swimming every morning before breakfast in the summer months until he was 88. After he retired he had more time to devote himself to other matters. He became a committee member of the League of Friends of Halstead Hospital in 1991, in 1993 he was asked for form the League of Friends on St. Andrews Church, he often gave talks on his life as a vet and wrote several fund-raising booklets. He joined the Courtaulds Bowls Club in 1994, he helped re-establish the Halstead Caledonian Society that became the Halstead and District Anglo Scottish Society and was a founder member of the Halstead Probus Club. He is survived by three sons, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. On Friday, September 7 there will be a cremation service for the family, followed by a thanksgiving service at St. Andrews Church, Halstead at 3.00 p.m., to which everyone is welcome. Family flowers only. Donations to The League of Friends of St. Andrews Church and/or The Halstead Hospital League of Friends may be sent to Derek Holmes at Daniel Robinson & Sons, 52 Trinity Street, Halstead, Essex, CO9 1GB, telephone (01787) 475533.
