Armed police have been called to a town centre after a man was seen carrying a gun in a west Suffolk town.

Officers were called to St Andrews Street South in Bury St Edmunds at about 7am on Friday after reports of an incident. 

A man had been seen walking with what is believed to be a gun, a Suffolk police spokesman said.

Armed officers are at the scene and are carrying out enquiries.

There have been no reports that anyone has been injured or threatened.

The suspect has been described as white, believed to be aged in his late 20s, of a stocky build, about 5ft 10ins tall and with tattoos on his arms.

He was wearing a grey T-shirt and dark shorts.
