A Bury St Edmunds woman is celebrating her 60th birthday by taking on the Great North Run.

Adrienne Williams, 59, will run the 13.1 miles alongside 60,000 other runners for Save the Children charity, where she has worked for nine years.

She was inspired after watching the Great North Run on TV last year and, when asked by family and friends what she wanted to do for her 60th birthday, she decided to take on the biggest half marathon in the UK.

She took part in a half marathon in 2017, but this will be her first organised event with competitors and spectators.

Ms Williams said: "I decided to do the Great North Run as a challenge for my 60th birthday after being inspired watching people do it on the TV, I thought I can do that!

"I am privileged to see the impact fundraising has in my role at Save the Children to transform the lives and rights of children all over the world. As a complete non-runner, this will be by far my biggest sporting achievement.

"I have begun to get over my nerves and I am excited to be part of such huge event especially as so many people have supported me, I am determined not to let them down."

Helen Slee, community fundraising & engagement manager of Save the Children UK, said: "We are incredibly impressed and grateful to Adrienne for taking on such a big challenge for her birthday, to raise funds for Save the Children.

"Her commitment to fundraising and running means we can carry out life-changing work for children across the globe. We look forward to cheering her on at the Great North Run on the 8th September."

Ms Williams started off aiming to raise £1,000 but has already raised over £1,800 and would like to raise as much as much as possible.
