A woman who has graduated from a college university degree with first-class honours was told she'd never walk or talk.

Lizzie Foulkes studied on an Early Childhood Studies degree with University Studies at West Suffolk College in Bury St Edmunds and has graduated with a first-class degree.

She has right Hemiplegia, which is paralysis on the right hand side of the body after injury to the brain or spinal chord.

When she was young, the doctor told her parents that she wouldn't be able to walk or talk.

The 41-year-old from Haverhill said: "My mum got me a bracelet around 25 years ago saying 'she believed that she could - so she did' and this has been a constant source of motivation for me.

"So, with my mantra in mind, I went for it and started a degree three years ago.

"After all the hard work – graduation was the pay off – and it was emotional.

"When I got the scroll in my hands it was an amazing feeling.

"I only wish the doctor who wrote me off as I child was there to see it. I’d look them in the eye and tell them I’m a walking and talking example that anything is possible."
