Scotland World Cup star Kyle Coetzer is set to make his debut for Suffolk in Sunday’s Unicorns KO Trophy opener against Norfolk.

Coetzer, who scored a record 156 for Scotland in their World Cup group game against Bangladesh, is named in a 14-strong squad for the match at Ipswich School, start 11am.

The former skipper struck Scotland’s first ever World Cup century, and the highest score by any associate nation batsman in World Cup matches, in a losing cause in their group game in Nelson.

The 31-year-old, who was born in Aberdeen, plays for first-class county Northamptonshire, but has signed for Suffolk’s Unicorns KO Trophy campaign.

New Suffolk skipper Tom Huggins said: “Kyle is a brilliant addition as a top-order batsman who will add a different dimension to our game. He will also add experience and hopefully the younger lads will feed off this.”

Coetzer is joined in the squad by two other newcomers – Jon Steel, a medium quick bowler who is playing for Mildenhall this season, and Harry White a left-arm quick bowler who is on Derbyshire’s books.

Steel played for Suffolk in Sunday’s five-wicket friendly defeat to Essex 2nd XI at Billericay, returning figures of two for 32 from ten overs.

Tom Craddock, who was released by Essex at the end of last season and has since signed for Yorkshire, is also named in the squad.

The leg spinner last played for Suffolk in the final Minor Counties Championship match of the 2012 season, when he spun Suffolk to victory by claiming six second-innings Lincolnshire wickets.

Billy Root, who played for Suffolk in last season’s competition, is unavailable as is Josh Davey, who starred in the World Cup for Scotland and at one stage was the tournament’s leading wicket-taker.

Davey is now with first-class county Somerset, although he may figure at some stage during the season for Suffolk if his commitments allow.

Sunday’s match represents the dawn of a new era for Suffolk following the appointment of Huggins as captain in succession to Justin Bishop, who will continue to play in one-day matches.

Sudbury’s opening batsman Nathan Poole, who played in the final two championship matches of last season, is named in the squad, but another promising young player, leg spinner Russell Stockdale, is currently still in Australia.

Huggins said: “we’re really looking forward to the season. We’ve got a strong squad and progressed through the group last year which has been strengthened this year.

“We had a good run out last weekend against Essex and are looking forward to the season starting for real on Sunday. Our aim is to hit the ground running and set ourselves high standards from ball one.”
